Abhyangam (Ayurvedic massage)

"Abhyanga is the procedure where the whole body is massaged using specific medicated oil to nourish, revitalize the body tissues, impart oleation, complexion, stability, destroys fatigue and disturbances due to vata dosha.

Duration of Treatment: 60 minutes

Therapeutic Effects: Can be used in following conditions;

· Nervous disorders and Musculoskeletal disorders:

Swedana

By using special herbs specific to the doshas and ailments of a person, an herbal steam bath is administered which opens the pores and flushes and cleanses the system through the skin. Its effect is enhanced when taken after Abhyanga.

Kaya Seka (Pizhichil - Sarvangadhara)

Kaya Seka is the process in which the body is made to perspire by means of pouring of warm medicated oil in a specific manner. Four therapists, two on each side of the
basin carry out the process.

Duration of Treatment:- 90 minutes

Therapeutic Effects:- Enhancement of body strength, immunity. Can be used in following conditions;

Dhara (Shirodhara)

Sirodhara is the process in which medicated oil, milk, buttermilk is poured in a continuous stream on the forehead in a specific manner. Two therapists perform this treatment.

Duration of Treatment:- 45 minutes

· Premature graying of hairs
· Fatigue
· Infirmity and emaciation

Sirovasthi

Shirovasthi is the procedure where in the medicated oil is retained on the head for a prescribed period. Two therapists perform this procedure.

Duration of Treatment:- 60 minutes

· Dryness of the scalp
· Itching on the head
· Head-ache
· ENT diseases
· Certain skin conditions of the scalp
· Burning sensation on the head

Njavarakizhi

It is a procedure by which the whole body or any specific part thereof is made to perspire, by the application of certain medicinal drugs with Njavara(special variety of rice that grows in 60 days.) rice puddings externally in the form of boluses tied up in a muslin bag. Four therapists administer this procedure.

Duration of Treatment:- 90 minutes

Elakizhi (Patrapotala Sweda)

This is a type of Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein herbal leaf poultice are used to give fomentation and simultaneous massage on whole body or any specific part.

· Myalgia

Podikizhi (Choorna Sweda)

This is a type of Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein medicated powders are made into poultice and used for giving fomentation.

Duration of treatment: 60 minutes

Therapeutic effects:

· Certain types of neurological conditions
· Certain conditions in Arthritis caused due to block of vata by kapha.
· Over weight and obesity
· Some types of acute pains like sciatica, lumbago etc.

Udwarthanam (Dry Massage)

Udwarthanam is the treatment where in the massage is done with powders of medicines. The powder is rubbed forcibly on the body in upward direction.

Duration of Treatment: 60 minutes

Therapeutic Effects: Can be used in following conditions;

· Obesity
· Dullness of body and mind
· Conditions arising due to improper blood supply

Thalapothichil

This is a special procedure of application of medicated paste on the head.

Duration of treatment: 30 minutes

Therapeutic effects:

· Insomnia
· Burning sensation of body
· Certain skin diseases of the scalp
· Insanity and epilepsy
· Some stages of mental retardation

Kativasthi

In this procedure specially prepared warm medicated oil is placed on the back region(Lumbar) for a specific time

Duration of Treatment: As per the condition of the patient.

Therapeutic Effects: Can be used for following conditions;

· Back ache
· Stiffness in the low back

Urovasthi

In this procedure, specially prepared warm medicated oil is placed on the chest for a specific time.

Duration of Treatment: As per the condition of the patient.

Therapeutic Effects: Can be used for following conditions;

· Mild angina
· Muscular chest pain

Shiroabhyanga

A soothing massage of the head, neck & shoulder for 30 minutes using warm herbal oils.

· Cooling to the eyes
· Headache
· Removes dandruff
· Pre-mature graying & hair loss
· Profoundly soothing and relaxing.

Tarpana

A therapeutic application and retention of medicated ghee on the eyes. Tarpana is widely used for various conditions of the eyes.

Therapeutic effects:

· For maintaining good eye sight
· Correction of refraction errors
· Early stages of retinopathy
· Early stages of retinitis pigmentosa

Shiropichu

Medicated oil is applied to the head in a special manner.

Duration of treatment: 45 minutes

Therapeutic effects: Can be used for following conditions;

· Facial palsy
· Headache
· Insomnia
· Improves memory
· Dermatitis of the scalp
· Dandruff
· Other neurological disorders Paralysis
· Skin disorders such as Eczema

Chakra Basti

This Basti is applied to the umbilical region. It acts on the solar plexus and balances the digestive fire.

Duration of treatment: 45 minutes

Therapeutic effects: Can be used for following conditions;

· Indigestion
· Constipation

Padaghata

This is a very unique whole body massage using feet instead of hands. It is performed by two therapists for one hour.

Duration of treatment: 60 minutes

Therapeutic effects:

· Removes deep seated pain in the joints and bones
· Deeply relaxing
· Helps in removing toxins from deeper tissues
· Removes excess of fat

Padaabhyanga

A very stimulating massage of the lower legs and the feet for 30 minutes to activate the acupressure points.

· Induces deep sleep
· Improves luster of the skin

Hrid Basti

This procedure is applied over the heart for 25 minutes using warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions.

· Strengthening of the heart
· Relieves deep seated anger and sadness
· Cardio Myopathy

Janu Basti

In this treatment the knee is bathed in warm medicated oils or herbal decoctions, taking 20 to 30 minutes. It promotes the strength of the knee joint by improving the circulation.
